The Magic of Matcha

anneke91

Matcha is a true gift. This vibrant green powder is more than just a coffee replacement—it’s a powerhouse of antioxidants, a natural brain booster, and a gentle supporter of weight management.

As the Japanese proverb goes, “Matcha is the elixir of immortality.” While it may not grant eternal life, it certainly brings a depth of wellness that extends beyond just a daily pick-me-up.

Why Make the Switch from Coffee to Matcha?

Long story short, for me—adrenal burnout does not like coffee. When you’re caught in a cycle of exhaustion, feeling either tired but wired or simply fatigued, your body craves rest and nurturance, not overstimulation. This is where matcha works its magic.

I had been off coffee for several years whilst pregnant and after having kids, but as sleepless nights and the demands of running a business and family piled up, coffee crept back into my routine. I found myself relying on that morning cup to get going, only to be wired when I needed to sleep. My heart rate would spike, and anxiety would take hold. Even just one cup a day sent me on a rollercoaster that left my adrenals overtaxed. And let’s be honest—most of us live a fast-paced life where stress is a frequent companion.

I didn’t need coffee. I needed rest. And I needed a nourishing alternative for those days when I needed an extra boost.

Discovering the Magic of Matcha

I had enjoyed green tea for years, but I was introduced to matcha in 2018. Unlike traditional green tea, matcha is made from shade-grown tea leaves, allowing them to develop a rich concentration of chlorophyll and nutrients. Only the youngest, most delicate leaves are hand-picked and stone-ground into a fine, vibrant green powder. This process, originating in China and later perfected in Japan, has been used for centuries in Zen Buddhist rituals and traditional tea ceremonies.

I immediately fell in love with its viscosity—the smooth, creamy texture made it a perfect coffee replacement. It gave me sustained energy without the jittery highs and crashing lows.

My Go-To Matcha Recipe

  • 1 level scoop (2.5-5g) of high-quality matcha

  • 100ml boiled (but not boiling) water

  • 150ml organic coconut milk (or any milk of your preference)

Use a matcha whisk to thoroughly mix the March and hot water. Heat milk and then add for a delicious latte or enjoy without milk as a shot.

Choosing the Right Matcha

When purchasing matcha, opt for ceremonial grade rather than culinary grade for the best flavor and benefits. A high-quality matcha should have a vibrant green color, a fresh, grassy aroma, and a naturally sweet taste with no bitterness. Be wary of buying large quantities—ceremonial-grade matcha is potent, and anything over 50g per purchase is often unnecessary.

Yes, the price reflects the quality, but so does the experience. Investing in a good matcha means investing in your well-being.
